What is the main problem in Booked?
The main conflict of this book begins when Nicks’ mother tells him that not only has she landed a job in Kentucky to train horses, but she and his dad are separating. This is where Nick’s character arc comes into focus as he confronts the sudden confusion and anger he feels.

I believe the overall theme of Booked is finding freedom from fear. In many areas of Nick’s life—soccer, family, bullies at school, friends—Nick experiences fear.
What happened to Nick in Booked?
He continues playing and collapses during a faceoff with Coby in the title poem, “Booked.” Nick awakes in the hospital, learning that his ankle is sprained and he has a perforated appendix. He undergoes surgery to remove the appendix. His doctor tells Nick he won’t be able to play in the Dallas Cup; Nick is devastated.
