Although RetroPie will work on any Raspberry Pi, even the $5 Raspberry Pi Zero, we recommend using one with as much RAM as possible, because this will result in a smoother gaming experience. For our tutorial, we’ll be using an 8GB Raspberry Pi 4.
Is Raspberry Pi 4 better than 3B+?
The Raspberry Pi version 4 is a bump up in every spec from the previous model. The CPU, the GPU, the memory speeds, and even the SD card read and write speeds are much faster, and the system as a whole should prove to be a lot more robust for those projects that were almost too much for the model 3B+ to tackle.
Can a Raspberry Pi 3 run RetroPie?
If you’re going to build an arcade cabinet with RetroPie, the first thing you’ll probably want to do is buy a Raspberry Pi 3. You can use a RPi 2, but the emulation won’t be as good, so get the RPi 3 if you can. I really like the kits from CanaKit (CanaKit is not a sponsor, though they should be).
Whats better Raspberry PI 3 or 4?
Even though both the boards feature chips from Broadcom, Raspberry Pi 4 offers significantly faster performance. If you want to use it as your mini-desktop replacement or want better computing power for your tasks, Raspberry Pi 4 will be the obvious pick.
