Any time you pass data through a chip there will be a certain amount of latency introduced. Also, if you have multiple devices on the hub, you are sharing the capacity of the bus between them, and this can cause latency to be added if the devices are doing a lot of interaction with the system.

A lot of devices that are used in modern music production are USB powered. And the number of ports on the computer is pretty limited. So if you want to use an audio interface and at least a couple of MIDI controllers, a USB hub is essential.
